Updated post on 17th July 10:222 pm.  Andy got the ID for the unknown moth below, it was an Udea prunalis.  
In the comments below, I said I'd seen one some time ago. Looking at my archived files, I found that I had one last year on the 16th July. So, it was one year and a day since I saw it. These moths are nothing if not consistent!

At last, today, I managed to bring the ladders from the cellar and climb them to photograph moths. That's a big improvement for me.

First, the one I'm unable to ID. Anne searched the Internet, whilst I looked through my moth books. An hour later, we still had no idea. I've not seen this moth before. It was in the most difficult place it could be. It was tucked right into the left corner of the stone lintel above the door. I couldn't get right under it with the camera, so the photos are not of the best. It was facing toward me, at the front of it's "face" just under the wings, there was a white area. You can just see some of the scales on the close-up, if it helps. I tried to get it's wingspan but it flew off when I got the ruler near. Blast!

ID needed.

The coloured form of Marbled Beauties seem to be arriving. (As opposed to the grey/black/white ones), which are always first in the season to show, by some two - three weeks. At least in the village.

As I was up the ladder, Anne said, "We have a hummingbird Hawk moth on the climbing rose, about three feet from you". I was unable to get a photo, it flew over the roof. This is only the third one I've seen. The first was a few years ago in Haworth, outside the Edinburgh Wool Mill. Second time was at Binham Abby, Norfolk. I spent twenty minutes following it, trying to get a photo. It flew off. They seem camera shy, or just to fast for me. Still, we have seen one in the garden, it may return.

Tar Hill

Thought I might chance an hour or so on Chris's site this afternoon. Mainly because I have never seen White-letter Hairstreak and his sighting recently spurred me on. I wasn't disappointed.
It took  a while before I found the target - a little beauty right in front of me.

It was also a surprise to find at least 2 Holly Blue's. They were tricky, flying over the weedy area, stopping briefly then heading off over the beech trees not to be seen again for another 20 minutes or so. It was a while before I could be sure of their identity and managed just a few poor shots but enough to confirm.

Been chasing this round for a couple of days and finally got it , would not open its wings ....any one else had Holly blue recently.?? At least 6 Purple Hairstreaks yesterday evening at  Northowram.

Last night

Just as I was leaving Cromwell bottom last night , I saw a Carpet sp flying around the light it was one of the tricky Xanthorhoe species one of my favourite groups (turned out to be Dark barred twin spot carpet ) . It was lost to view just as I saw it , the one that got away ...damm. As i got home I had left my trap on and had a quick look before bedtime. A Xanthorhoe species was in the trap flying around. I potted it up at put it the fridge for identification latera (a very smart Miller as well)  . ......I had a look in the morning ......RED CARPET Xanthorhoe decloraria..................Its a funny old game............There are a few old records for this high mountain species with one near Widdop on the 24th July 1897 and 1926 .
