It's a red letter day for me. There was a White Plume moth on the door at 2a.m. It's the first I've ever seen.

Wider Countryside Butterfly Count

Earlier today we did the Tetrad SE0430 for WCBS. Its the same survey area as the BTO Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) covering parts of Cold Edge and Ovenden Moor
We managed not many species but enjoyed what we found in the survey area

Large Skipper x 13
Small Tortoiseshell x 32
Small Heath x 18
Small White x 4
Meadow Brown x 8
Large White x 1
Red Admiral x 6 (most of these were flying directly across Ovenden Moor >S. There would likely have been many more had we stayed but the survey also involves a time factor.

Moths included single Yellow Shell, SilverY and a Cinnabar.

We also managed to find four of these Burnet Moths on Geraniums.
I suspect these are Narrow-bordered Five-spot Burnet ( ssp latomarginata) as opposed to Five-spot (trifolii). ??
This latter one, according to Yorkshire Moths is a southern and coastal species.
Also Norfolk Moths mentions they are inseparable other than Gen-det

Yorkshire Moths quotes on the Narrow-bordered.....
2012 (CHF): Widespread across the county in flowery grassland. This species seems to have increased since 1989 and numbers are currently stable. We often receive records of Five-spot Burnet but this has never been reliably recorded in the county and further examination shows that these are all Narrow-bordered.

Anyone aware of updates since then ? or do we record as aggregate species ?

A 27c day led to trapping happening and wow it was busy. Anyone would need aly and midge net round themselves when the trap was opened! Star of the night True Lovers Knot.

Rishworth - Anomalous related things

Just so people have an idea of the habitat of the Anomalous moth's field I took a picture.  This i the one I found them in opposite the house

Beautiful Snout x 1
Quite a few to go through (25 or so species). Including Light Emerald, Riband Wave, Peppered Moth, Green Oak Tortrix x 2, Flame x 2, Green Silver-lines, Flame Shoulder x 2, and two first for here this year - a Large Yellow Underwing and a Marbled Beauty.

Also at Ogden last night - found 2 Small Magpie on nettles and lots of Garden Grass Veneers. Also late on up there two each of Speckled Wood, Small Tortoiseshell and Meadow Brown and a single Large White. Unusual I think for them to be out just before dusk, but it was very warm.

Rishworth Update

The Mompha that was pending has turned out to be M. Lactella/ Propinquella Agg. Need gen set but didn't keep specimen, I generally don't do that.

Grey Pug

Just my second pug so far this year was this Grey Pug netted at dusk in the garden on the 21st. I've included a shot of the dissected Bursa Copulatrix adorned with plenty of spines.

A really disappointing catch after what seemed a perfect conditions overnight.
I suppose the best was Green Oak Tortrix x 2
The rest seemed to be the usual  other than a different Dark Arches and a Flame,

Earlier this week  (21st ) a Silver Y doing the rounds on the flowering plants outside.

Rishworth - A walk through the meadows

Went out for a walk this morning up the lane and through a couple of the plentiful meadows here. Plenty to see starting off with a micro there is a picture of below. I then went up the lane and further up just past some Hemp Agrimony I spotted this Geometrids' caterpillar feeding on a Wild Rose (see pic). I carried on through the centre of the village (we live further down at the bottom on the main road) and out on to one of the many meadows that surround us here. There was lots to see here with Chimney Sweepers and Meadow Browns (both no pics) but the main purpose of going there was to check up on our local Six Spot Burnet Moth colony, in just 5mins of searching, two chrysalis' were found (see pic) one was hatched one not. Carried on to Shaw Lane, not a driveable one and spotted a Speckled Wood (see pic) and an orange moth , WS15mm, flying around the holly bushes (no pic). I came back throught the village and on to the lane I started on seeing a Large Skipper (see pic) and the n back home.

Cat for ID please

Julian from the Halifax Scientific Society sent me this photo of a 55mm larva feeding on his aquilegias - anybody any ideas?

Comma butterfly through the garden this morning.

Trap not all that productive though heavy overnight rain probably curtailed things.

10mm or so. Thought maybe Cyclemen Tortrix or ? or just a worn Light-brown Apple Moth but the shape doesn't look right for the latter. Maybe just a very worn Tortrix.

 Maybe 6mm - Mompha subbistrigella  ? - but I'm not familiar with it
