My experiment with blogger is: I have written this at 6:30am and if I post this now, it will come up in the previous day's section on the homepage of the website because this blog's clock seems to be on Pacific Day time. So to make it look on the web that it was posted the day it was actually posted I'm going to schedule this and have it automatically posted by Blogger at 10 o'clock. After reading this, if the bit where it says the time is says 02:00 it worked.

Soil Hill

 Warm sunshine, even on Soil Hill this afternoon. It's not often so warm up there !!

6 Small Tortoiseshell's on Ned Hill Road and another 4 on the north facing slope. 

Also 1 Small / Green-veined White - only saw it in flight

This afternoon - in the warm sunshine I found 5 Small Tortoiseshells in different places and all disturbed on sun facing walls. All looked really smart individuals so probably freshly emerged (?). One unidentified white flying over a bank of gorse was a probably a Small White.

This afternoon a Speckled Wood landed on the furniture in the conservatory though it departed unscathed.

 Finally a Lunar Underwing appeared here in Rishworth last night a long with three other moths, being two NFYs and a Large Yellow Underwing.

One Rosy Rustic last night. It's markings are different to the one I posted on the 18th of Sept. As has happened in the past, a species I've not seen before, then I find two in the same month. Perhaps they are around in bigger numbers this year. Does anyone know?

 It's the Atumn Exquinox today (14:31, should you be interested). There were two moths celebrating it;

1 x Light Brown Apple.

1 Garden Rose Tortrix. 

I wasn't surprised to see it, just surprised I've not seen more of them this year. It's only 3 feet from our climbing rose. This year, the rose has excelled itself, it's about 12 feet high and flowering fit to bust. We've never seen it so tall before.

 A fantastic night here in Rishworth with Autumn species has left me over the moon, I assume you can see why if you read on...

A fantastic night though. The numbers may seem pathetic but fantastic species.

Just some notes on why I am so pleased with these. Merveille du Jour is common elsewhere but rather scarce here in Calderdale and it is beautiful, in addition, it is my second year on the trot I have had this moth. Feathered Ranunculus is also beautiful but has very few inland populations in the UK, Calderdale being one. Heath Rustic because likewise with Neglected Rustic not many people see this moth but I fortunately do. And finally, I don't think many people have managed these three species in their Garden Trap on one night.

 Frosted orange and the run on Lunar Underwings continues......LYU and lesser YU , CMC and a very tatty Copper Underwing agg...An excellent day for Vapourer with at least 3 seen today , one at Northowram , Ringstone and Rishworth...........Small ,Large White , Red Admiral and lots of Small Tortoiseshell today...

 This post is two days late. I had a slight accident and was unable to use the computer for a short while. After some treatment the day it happened, it's recovering quickly, God bless osteopaths!

 There was a very nice Silver Y on the fanlight this morning. Because the sun was moving onto the glass, I took a couple of quick shots with the FZ72. Then I went to get the ladders, I wanted a good macro photo. Draginging my ladders out of the cellar at 6:30am, before I was fully functioning, is no joke. There was I sweating and breathing hard and the moth had gone. Damn and blast! So, I have a poor photo, Non-the-less, it's a record of it.

 A walk fron Broad Carr Lane to West Vale. 14 Sept. 2020.

It was a beautiful, warm. still and sunny day.  I saw;

2 x Large White.

3 x Small Tortoiseshell.

1 x Speckled Wood.

2 x Red Admirals. (On Green Lane, West Vale.)

 

The only photo I managed to get, was a Red Admiral. Neither of them wanted to open their wings and sunbathe, they were too busy nectaring. I tried for about 3 or 4 minutes, below, was the best shot.

 A decent night again last night with Common Marbled Carpet numbers soaring. One I was bloomin' pleased with was Small Autumnal Moth. But the time the good moth arrives... the camera has no charge.

A couple of months ago, Andy C commented on how many Elm trees there are here in Rishworth, this got me thinking, because a lot of scarcer moths feed on Elm. Now my main ambition thi Autumn, is to catch a Dusky Lemon Sallow.

And by the way, I am really pleased with the Small Autumnal Moth.

Elephant

 Last Saturday, Sept 5th, in the afternoon, there was an Elephant Hawkmoth caterpillar munching on the Rose-bay Willowherb at the side of Burnley Road between Cornholme and Portsmouth.

This afternoon, I went for a walk in Fall Spring Woods, (Stainland). I saw 2 Speckled Wood butterflies at the edge of the wood. I was surprised to see them flying, as there was quite a strong, gusty wind. 

 The only other signs of wildlife were a Magpie, and a Meadow Pipet, which I startled from the grass. I could hear a Buzzard, but never saw it.

 Quite a pleasing night last night, with 34 moths of 10 species being quite good. The umbrella was over the trap again.

Not  a lot else the last few days -  a diminishing number of Large Yellow Underwings and a single Lesser Yellow Underwing. 1 Square-spot Rustic and 2 Garden Carpets, 2 Common Marbled Carpets and this morning a rather worn looking Center-barred Sallow.
