A bit of a puzzler at first then I got it with the loaded crossbow description !

Stainland, 23rd - 29th September.

I haven't been able to post for a while, but have still kept watch over any moths which arrive at our door. Looking through the posts on this blog, over the period 23rd-29th of this month, there doesn't seem to have been a great deal on moths reported. I consider myself very fortunate to have had a good range of them. I put this down to the fact that our garden is sheltered and the doorway protected from the wind and rain. OK. Now some moths, in no particular order.

Angle shades.

I looked at my archives and found that the first Feathered ranunculus I found by our door, was on the 11th of Oct, 2017. I didn't see one last year. In the last 4 days, comparing the markings, I've had two different ones. A colony of this mainly coastal moth, is know to exist in Calderdale, I wish I knew where.

I've had numerous Light Brown Apple moths this year. They are still appearing every day in ones and twos.

I've seen 5 Garden Carpets this year. There is one on the fanlight at this moment.

I'm not 100% certain I have IDd the next one correctly. I found 2 or 3 images on the Web which matched it. If I'm right, it's a first for me. I think it's a November Moth agg. If anyone knows different, please tell me.

So, 11 moths, not too bad, considering the awful weather we've been having. I know it's been bad, our cellar is flooded again. Hey ho!

Rishworth-Leaf Mines

After a walk in my local wood (Turner Wood) I was examining the various flora in the woods and I noticed a couple of what I think are non-tenanted leaf mines on  some Himalayan Balsam. I would recommend this wood for searching for any plants and fungi and moths.

                                           Are these leaf mines? If they are which species?

The heavy rain continues so the trap was off again overnight. I found this one on the door, attracted by the porch light.

Markings are just about non existent but enough for Mottled Umber

It had gone by this morning but a Silver Y was nearby. Hope we get some dry nights soon !

National Moth Night at Rishworth

Hello everybody,

Just a reminder to get prepared for National Moth Night. Get those traps out!

This National Moth Night is aimed at migrant moths such as the Clifden Nonpareil and Rusty Dot Pearl. Good luck everyone else trapping tonight!

Had a pleasant wander around Carr Hall lane and Gosport clough yesterday looking mainly for leaf mines and fungi - needless to say there were plenty of both about.

As I expected there were a few Lichen Case-bearer (Dahlica lichenella) cases around although I didn't spend too much time looking for them. A Lime Hawkmoth larva was a nice surprise speeding along on a wall underneath what is possibly the only Lime tree on the walk! Too fast for photos in the dull weather sadly.

Best leaf mines were four Dark Hornbeam Midget (Phyllonorycter esperella) mines on Hornbeam by Holywell Brook. An upperside blotch which eventually folds the leaf right over. They were all tenanted so hopefully the couple I took to rear will produce adults next spring.

A few Parrot Waxcaps were found all of which exhibited green on some part of the fruit body - always a favourite of mine.

Autumn Green Carpet this morning - unfortunately the camera failed just as I was about to 'snap it'. Then it disappeared ! Only my third record for here.

Rishworth Caterpillars (Possibly Cabbage Moths)

Recently I found what I think are 2 Cabbage Moth caterpillars feeding on the garden wild Lesser-Swine Cress. A quick update on the Elephant Hawk Moth and it is sheltering under a half eaten leaf!
The larva has stripped 3 Himalayan Balsam plants since I found it.
Below find an attached picture of one.

                                                     It is alive just wet as it was still munching!

                                                     Is everyone sure it is a Cabbage Moth larva.

To add to Edwards sighting, we came across an Elephant Hawkmoth caterpillar in the middle of the road this afternoon. Definitely not a safe place to be....... so we rescued it and put it back safely away from the road in the vegetation, a small mix of nettles and marsh thistle etc, but mostly grasses. It was a bit of a surprise finding one at this elevation. It grabbed hold of the handkerchief and was very reluctant to let go !

We also found a Silver Y  fluttering around the vegetation.
Butterflies species a bit limited despite the hot sunny conditions but  not a lot of flowering plants up there.

Just found this micro moth  scurrying around on the living room window. Is anyone up for an ID? Thought it may be a Brown House Moth.HMoth.Hoffmannopheila Pseudospretella.
