Lee Mount - Thursday 28th July

Pretty quiet last night, though it was cooler than recent evenings 13c with rain threatening.
This moth below was interesting and fortunately I managed to get an underwing shot which suggests (I think) a Dark Marbled Carpet rather than Common Marbled Carpet.
Also the time of year would seem to support this !

Dark Marbled Carpet
Other moths included
Willow Beauty x 1
Dark Arches x 1
Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing x 1
Light Emerald x 1
Swallowtail x 2
Marbled Beauty x 2
Small Fan-footed Wave x 1

Swales Moor

Along Ringby Lane this afternoon
1 Wall Butterfly 100m up the lane opposite the ski-slope. Perfect afternoon with hot sunshine but the wind was pretty strong. Instead of landing on the wall it kept hiding away in the grass and eventually headed off over the fields towards Swales Moor Road.

Also up Ringby Lane and on the top-:
4 Small Tortoiseshell
5 Meadow Brown
1 Small Heath
2 Ringlet
3+ Burnet type moths in flight
1 Large Skipper
1 unidentified White

Lee Mount - Tuesday 26th July

Fairly quiet though conditions seemed ideal. Amongst the usual suspects came 3 very nice moths.

 July Highflyer
Slender Brindle (a new one for here)

In the Dark........

Here is a interesting article as to why some of  our local LNR's and unlit natural environments are sucessful and prolific for Moths

Lee Mount Pugs (?)

2 recent pugs....

Top - 2, not brilliant photos, from 24th July of the same moth with just over 10mm forewing length. Wonder if the detail on the photos is good enough to confirm or suggest id - thinking maybe Bordered Pug

This is a better photo of a pug from 20th July and thinking possibly Slender Pug (wing length just about 10mm) with the shape of the dark spot leaning me towards Slender Pug.

The White Stigma forms tend to be  M. didyma

Quieter last night compared with previous ones though the evening seemed perfect.

Countrywide Butterfly Survey

We did our survey area this afternoon, unfortunately the sun did not shine but it was warm 18c.
Results are sent in on line via the BTO site. These totals include the survey area + parts of lower Cold Edge and parts of Ovenden Moor. About 2 and half hours in total.
Large Skipper x 2
Ringlet x 50 counted but there were a lot more around
Meadow Brown x 3
Unidentified White x 1
Small Tortoiseshell x 1
Antler Moth x 1

Perhaps if we had been able to go earlier in the week with the hot sunshine we would probably have managed more of the above as well as other species !!

Roils Head Moor

A few hours on Roils Head this morning produced a few butterfly & moth species including:-
Meadow Brown
Small Heath
Yellow Shell
Large Yellow Underwing
Silver Y

And a few below that I need help idntifying.

Small micro

Think this might be an ichneumon wasp?

Not sure if this a china mark.....

Swales Moor

Ringby Lane this afternoon with lots of Ringlets and Meadow Browns, 4 Small Tortoiseshell, 3 Small Heath, 1 Red Admiral and 1 Large Skipper. On the very top there were maybe 20 or so Burnets which I think were all likely to be Narrow-bordered Five-spot Burnets like the ones I found up there recently. I couldn't find anything different among them.

Lee Mount 19th July

Moths all over the place last night (23 species including 5 micros) - especially Large Yellow Underwings giving both me and themselves a 'bashing'.!
Best one for me was a Ruby Tiger and True Lover's Knot x 2 together in the trap this morning. I might have struggled with id but seeing them on Norland Moor recently was a big help. Lovely moths.
True Lover's Knot

Not sure about these 2 below - still trying to work them out
Wonder about  Rufous Minor above but do these go as Minor agg ?

Wave but not sure which one yet - looked smaller than Riband Wave with c12mm forewing length

Ogden golf course

Yesterday 18th July 2016
Another new one, thanks to a tip off from Andy, which I found above Stodfold (between the golf course and Mixenden Reservoir. A  great looking moth though it was tricky getting a decent clear photo as the wind was blowing the vegetation quite a lot.
Beautiful Yellow Underwing

Lee Mount

Last few days  -a lot of moths but can't catch up yet with posting everything so just putting 2 on that I can't just figure out !
Not getting anywhere with the top one yet but still trying - quite a distinct shape though very dark  and markings not very clear with wing length c 15mm

This second one - wondered about Willow Beauty ? I did have some of these last year but I'm not very familiar with this group and the colour didn't look quite as grey as the previous ones - wing length c 23mm
