Rishworth - 30th July - Overnight Moths - Mountain Rugs?

A good night was to be had last night here in Rishworth. Star of the show was a Grey Mountain Carpet.

Moth Trap 30th July:

Grey Mountain Carpet x1 [NFG] - Really annoyed by this, the story goes...: Camera Focused, moth perfectly sleeping in egg tray. Finger touches the button that takes the picture, presses it. MOTH FLIES OFF IN A MILISECOND BEFORE PICTURE WAS CAPTURED!!!

Lee Mount - daytime observation

30th July - Jennifer found this across lunch-time - she keeps reminding me who spotted it ..... I'd walked passed it several times !!!

It's only the third record for here with 2 August dates in 2016.

Scarce Silver-lines - looking a bit worn on the wing but good enough.

The morning after I posted my macro camera off for repair, I had four different moths. One, a light coloured carpet, took off before I got a photo or ID.

1 x Marbled Beauty. (Brown - orange).
1 x  Common Footman.
1 x Fan Foot.


I'm reduced to using the FZ72 for moths, it's not perfect, but OK for ID's.

Lesser Swallow Prominent - breeding success !

Female laying eggs 27th April. 12 collected from egg box others on fence could not be extracted though I eventually found 2 small caterpillars there on 19th May. The ones from the female hatched on 14th May

Initially very small cat's easy to lose, and left them in small plastic tubs and fed on birch leaves (host plant) with fresh leaves from the same tree every two days,. Length (approx) 3mm on 26th May, 20mm on 1st June. Changed to clean tubs every 3 days and kept in the garden hut.

 15th June - now around 35mm - they went glossy and buried themselves in c80mm seed/cutting compost in ice cream tubs

Four adults emerged on the same day, 27th July - just 3 months after egg laying, and located themselves on the hut window. They flew off out of the hut a dusk

Think there could be seven more in the tubs, if they've  survived ? I'll wait and see, as they probably are the ones that went to pupate a day or so later than the others.

Any thoughts on the is one ? - I'm suspecting Anania perlucidalis. I know it's a bit faded though smaller than Mother of Pearl with the dark mark just showing on each wing at one half and very long antenna and quite rounded wings.

My camera, or it's Leica macro lens, has developed a fault. The manual focusing ring is not responding. It looks like being a pricey repair. I've contacted Panasonic's repair company. It's over£60 for them to look at, before they start work on it. Which is fair, but still a lot of money. So, this could be my last post for a short while. I may be able to get some reasonable shots with one of my other cameras of course
