I thought maybe a chance of Beautiful Yellow Underwing this afternoon but that was not to be. The only moth I found was a Brown Silver-line and some Garden Grass Veneers.

Despite the breeze it was warm with lots of sunshine and plenty of butterfly's in sheltered spots down near the golf course. These included good numbers of Meadow Browns, Ringlets and Small Heaths, One each of Red Admiral and Small Tortoiseshell and 3 Small Whites. A few Large Skippers (mainly on brambles) but no sign of Small Skippers.

Not sure if anyone else has these yet but we have had one feeding in our Garden and Lower Burnt moor for the last two days. Its mainly feeding on Catmint (Nepeta sp) and Red Valarian. I was amazed to see it feeding on Red Valarian in strongs winds 15/20mph this morning and having no trouble in holding position whilst hovering

Painted Lady - two fluttering around a dusty track together - but could only get a photo of one of them this afternoon (26th.)

Yesterday the two Painted Lady's were in the same spot - hot and sunny late afternoon.

Ringlets, Meadow Browns, Small Tortoiseshells, Speckled Woods and Large Skippers x 2 on brambles.

Claremount area

Took a walk along Hag Lane this afternoon leading on to Turner Lane and the hillsides above Claremount. Cool and overcast as I arrived and not much doing, but the sun came out and the temperature lifted considerably.  On the hillsides lots of fields still uncut, fantastic looking meadows. Butterflies did not disappoint, with around forty.

Moths included Chimney Sweepers x 6, Small Magpie x 1 and a scattering of Nettle-taps on a number of nettle and bramble areas.

 Best return this year so far - 18 species - 33 moths. Still room for improvement.

Phone shot of a Gold Spot which I found on the wall later on this morning. Don't think it's a Lempke's.

Best of the others...............

Cabbage Moth, Turnip Moth, Clouded-bordered Brindle, Setaceous Hebrew Charter, Middle-barred Minor, Flame, Buff Arches and Cypress Tip Moth (Argyresthia cupressella).

Still sorting through the photos.

Also in the garden this morning - one each of Wall and Meadow Brown butterflies and a Large White.

 Very pleased to get this cracking Red necked Footman last night , plenty other moths about , Displaying Ghost Moths in the field and 150 + moths in the trap...

This afternoon  i put out the Large Red belted Clearwing lure , checked it a few time with no luck but mid afternoon 1 Large Red belted Clearwing   was flying about the greenhouse , I could see it but was unable to get a photo..will keep trying...

Vapourer going on.....

So I have been seeing lots of Vapourer egg batches on heather of late 20 +) and  decided I would try and rear them as ,I have never seen a Vapourer adult male flying high up on the moors , I just wanted to be sure. WHen they hatched I was away and the moved from the jam jar onto Julias house plant and started eating the leaves straight away much to Julia's disapproval. .LOL They are all safe now eating sallow and are growing fast...LOL

A good number of pale moths in flight, unidentified but no sign of Ghost Moths, where I've had them previously, by 22:30.

An interesting hour or so late morning along Ringby Lane. Mainly overcast with a few spells of short sunshine. Quite windy but warm in a few sheltered spots.

At home the light trap only produced one Pug species as yet unidentified.

MOTH BREAKFAST AT PEACHY STEVE'S

There will be one (possibly two) traps run at Steve's Mirey Wall farm near Sowerby this Friday night.

The traps will be inspected on Saturday morning 18th June at 8.00am.
So if anyone would like to come along and help ID some moths 😊 please leave a message or we may start without you.
It won't be a lengthy process as there is a HSS walk planned for 10.00am.
Last July I saw 7 new species so the site has potential!

This morning I was hoping conditions would be right to find some Mother Shiptons' along the side of the golf course where I've had them before. Not  a sign - just too windy apart from 3 Silver-ground Carpets and two Common Heath in a sheltered spot. Also another Wall butterfly resting on a dusty track - but no other butterflies either.

At home - still really poor here with just two overnight moths - Heart and Dart x 1 and a Tachystola acroxantha x 1.

Its been steady in Luddenden this month with reasonable amounts of Moths nightly, highlights were another Pale Prominent on the 5th and these two last night

 Ringby Lane - at least 4 Wall butterflies this morning and a single Painted Lady on the top.

Another Wall at Withens Clough Reservoir this afternoon was the only butterfly.

Swales Moor area 3rd June

Early evening - very warm and sunny along Bradford Old Road towards Claremount. We immediately started coming across Wall butterflies along the roadside walls, obviously the stone was very warm after the heat of the day. Unprecedented, Walls are usually quite scarce around Calderdale but this area is usually quite good for them.

Wall x 10 including pairs spiralling, territoriality or pairing.

Ringby Lane moths ! - 2nd June

Three day flying moths puzzled me.

30+ Common Heaths around the heather/bilberry west slope were a bit easier to identify !.

Swales Moor - Ringby Lane - 2nd June

 A really nice warm sunny morning to start with up there.

I was surprised with the number of Wall butterfly's amounting to 23 sightings with a count estimate of at least 9 individuals along the length of the lane and in and around the top field.

Also seen Small Tortoiseshell x 3, Peacock x 2, Small Copper x 2, Small Heath x 1 and 2 unidentified 'whites'.

Another Wall was also found along Castle Carr Road this afternoon but no sign of any Green Hairstreaks in the usual places.

I had a nice surpise this morning. Inside the hall was a Cinnabar moth. I found one last year at Hollins, I only got poor photos. Today I got a good shot, before releasing it outside.
