 LUDDENDEN AUTUMN MOTHS

It's been a funny year for Moths with things being pretty quite all summer with Moth numbers down everywhere even when conditions seemed right. However I've done alright here in Luddenden with a decent number of Moths in September into October including my best year ever for Black Rustic and my first ever Vapourer in Luddenden

Ahhh - some sunshine today............

Small Tortoiseshell x 2 on the Sedum and Verbena bonariensis late morning but I could only get the one in focus as I was trying to get them together but that didn't work out !

Wainstalls and Castle Carr Road area this afternoon - and the sun was still shining with a light breeze.

 Three moths today, one is a first for me. It's quite worn but I think I got the ID right.

The only butterflies this week, various sites, has been 6 Red Admiral and 7 Speckled Woods

A moth flew into our hall today, it must have been on the door and I disturbed it. It settled on the carpet with wings open, I rushed to get a camera. It was an Angle Shades. I have never seen one with its wings open. I felt privileged and very lucky.  It's a little worn, but I'm not complaining!

I was very surprised to find a moth on the fanlight this morning. It wasn't there at 1am but was at 7am. Last night was wet, windy and cold, what a hardy little thing. It's a November moth (TBC).

The books say that it's hard to tell the difference between that and two other species. Photos of the other two that I looked at, look nothing like the specimen below. Please correct me if I got this wrong.

There I was at the end of August, thinking the seaon was drawing to a close. I saw the last of the Marbled Beauties here anyway. Obviously the lull in sightings was just poor weather.

Also a surprise just now when I disturbed  what I'm sure was a Vapourer on the side of the garage / pyrecantha. Despite the drizzle it flew around for half a minute and disappeared into the trees at the back of the house.

I have a backlog of moth records, (again!). I've had a rotten few months of ill heath. It keeps sneeking up on me, just when I think I'm recovering. Oh well, it will all go away at some point. Each day I took photos, when possible, putting them in dated folders. I've just spent the best part of two days IDing them. One or two below need IDs please.

BAT AND MOTH NIGHT SAT 18TH 8.30PM

 We are repeating the same thing as 2 weeks ago. Walk round reserve with torches and detectors, in stout footwear, warm clothes, and own torch.

Moth trap will be running, with plenty of specimens on return.

You might meet the real Batman and Robin!

Buddleia

The White Buddleia in our hilltop garden is far more attractive to Butterflies than the Blue one only 10 feet away which has the odd Small Tortoisehell visit now and then, but the contrast is massive. The white one has has a max count this morning when I just checked 20 mins ago of

 I've not been able to get onto my emails, or Google blog for over two weeks. Also, I've been ill for eight weeks. I've still been photographing the moths we get here, when I could. I'll start putting them on my machine and the post them soon.

In the meantime, today I went for a walk down Carr Hall Lane to Robber Dodge. I counted 20 Speckled Wood, and one (!) Large White. It must be the year for Speckled Woods.

Moth Trap Needed

Hi all, I'm moving to Luddenden Foot next week and the entire garden is decked over. So I thought the quickest way to attract moths would be to buy or borrow a moth trap (actinic?) - any help much appreciated.

Some hot sunny spells this last 2 days

Cold Edge a good show of Small Tortoiseshells yesterday (5th) with an occasional Peacock and Green-veined White.

Lee Mount - not a lot other than a Peacock and 2 Speckled Wood.

Carrs Beck and Hunter Hill this afternoon - 3 Walls (good to see there are still some about) and a single Small Heath. Also  a few Small Tortoiseshells, a Peacock, Green-veined White and a Small White

Not a lot doing with moths at home other than a max of 7 Copper Underwing agg and another Angle-striped Sallow this morning along with plenty Large Yellow Underwings still and a Small Phoenix etc...

7th September

So hot today and started off well with at least 10 Wall butterflies along Ringby Lane. Included 5 together chasing each other around in spirals. Also 2 Small Coppers, a Red Admiral and a Peacock and a good show of Small Tortoiseshells.

Also found a couple of small nettle patches with a few Nettle-taps came flying around when I brushed past the nettles.

Nothing too much out of the ordinary or expected this week. A Campion and 2 Small Phoenix on 30th August.

Still a good show of the various Yellow Underwings etc, Mouse Moth, Brimstone Moth and Garden Carpets (x 5 on 2nd September) with a Double-striped Pug this morning.

I suppose the best was this Centre-barred Sallow (2nd September)

Butterflies have gone very quiet this week with this dull weather - mainly just  a few Speckled Woods and a Green-veined White.
