If the size is right I would say that's a tatty Mottled Beauty.
Hi Charlie ,I too said Mottled Beauty but Mike Wall from Back garden Moths id'd it as a Great Oak Beauty...?? C.fletcher id'd it as a Mottled also but Mike is rarely wrong.The other thing is that there are no recent Yorkshire records.
It still looks nothing more than a Mottled Beauty to me, I can't see why it would be anything else.
I can understand the finder not wanting to "retain" the moth, but why wasn't size noted if something good was suspected?
There was no "size noted" Charlie because we were total beginners and didnt know one moth from another. If we had known there was any chance that the moth was anything other than a common a garden one we would have measured it , and anything else that would have helped with it ID
Hi Mick and Kath, I hope my reply wasn't too judgemental but for what it's worth I know exactly where you're coming from.I've often neglected measuring the forewing of interesting looking species thinking that the markings alone should be enough for an ID.
Without the measurement it's all too easy for your mind to play tricks on how large or small the moth really was - I was convinced my first ever Grey Birch was one of the "beauties" having only a photo to go on. I couldn't believe it when some one told me what it really was and how much I'd misjudged the true size of it.HTH.
