This small micro a Longhorn with rufous head was found nectarring on Garlic Mustard by the Calder . The larvae feed within the seed pods .
It shouldnt be confused with the smaller Micropterix calthella ( also with a red head but shorter antennae ) usually found on buttercup which has mouth parts capable of taking pollen

Well spotted there Colin, being so tiny they're easily overlooked as diptera.
Do you have any good sites for Micropterix (Calthella) species. I have a possible one for M.aureatella but haven't started searching yet with everything being late.

I read your your om your micro site I imaged calthella were the path splits on the way to the bird feeders at CB but there is so mucvh creeping buttercup I think they are common through out Interesting to see your larvae finds emerge very imporant work

That would be good Charlie. I am trying to arranage something for those interested perhaps this year on something fairly special etc Its been quite difficult this year getting the trap out with no RM Van more to follow
