Yesterday evening, (25th June) several Light Brown Apple moths.

At 3:30 am today, I was unable to sleep for pain. A quick look round our door showed the following:

1 x Riband Wave - non banded.
1 x Small Dusty Wave.
2 x Blastobasis lacticolella.
1 x Marbled Beauty - grey, black, white form.

The Marbled Beauty was quite a big one. The grey form are always the first  to show up here. Flight time supposedly starts July. It's almost that now, but perhaps the warm weather spurred them along a little?

All the moths had gone by 7 am except the Marbled Beauty.

Wheatley Valley

About an hour and a half this afternoon on the grassland area of the former landfill site adjacent to Shroggs Road. Rewarded with a good few butterflies and moths with guestimates on numbers as I could have found a lot more, if I'd been there all afternoon !.

Loads of Ringlets - too many to count they were all over the place. Surprising how difficult these were to photograph today. They wouldn't stay still for long then when they did they generally disappeared into the base of the long grass. Perhaps with the grass being so dry is maybe the reason for that (??)

A few day flying moths as well including Grass-veneer types flitting about through the long grasses but I had to let them go.

MId Summer Widdop Reservoir Fri 22 June 2018

Weather Daytime Warm 18 - 20o with rapid drop in temp after sunset coupled with North Westerly breeze blowing down the Valley cool to chilly later in the evening Open Skies and Mid Summer Long Day. 3 Present AC CD CS

Habitat   Widdop Reservoir is less than 10 miles to the north west of Hebden Bridge in Calderdale, West Yorkshire. Nestled in Widdop Valley and surrounded by dramatic rocky crags and exposed open moorland

Widdop Moor, June 22nd

It was a surprisingly cold night with a persistently chilling breeze and a clear, moonlit sky. Even the moths thought better of it after the first hour or so of darkness. Even so, I was happy to see three new macros species (see below) and there were a few micros to keep us guessing.

The first moth of the night was what I assume is a  Bryotropha terrella.  FW 7mm

Ringby Lane and on the top field this afternoon in hot sunshine with very little breeze - perfect !

A short walk from the reservoir on towards the lower end of Ogden golf course this morning turned up a few butterfly's and 1 day flying moth -
1 Yellow Shell.

Struggling with this one from yesterday morning in the trap...…..thinking either Dark or Dusky Brocade -perhaps leaning towards the latter but there seem to be a few other possibilities -(including - Confused) ?

Hello

I had a nice surprise this morning. There is a nicely shaped moth on a picture frame, inside our hall. I've not seen this one before, so I was very pleased. WS: 1.6 - 1.7cm.

Later in the day. it moved position. I got a better photo, so have replaced the first one. 

My stamina and concentration have not fully returned. By the time I'd photographed it and spent a little time in the moth books, I was shaking and muddled. Could someone ID it please? I thought it may be a small Wave but...

For good measure, Anne found a Buff Ermine on the path yesterday.  She bravely brought it to me. It was deceased, I think, a victim of our cat. I took some photos anyway. I love the colour of the Buffs.

A nice moth in the trap this morning which puzzled me for a while as haven't had hardly any of these before, well maybe just one.

 Coxcomb Prominent along with 2 Greenfly hosts on the top shot -  

very obliging of it to display the underwing

Despite radical contrast in the winds it is now still this pm and there appears to be  a lot on the move. Annoyingly a cat strike early in the pm part emptied the trap on its side . A list species of Tree that light was reaching from this trap

Birch, Apple , Cherry , Leylandi, Various garden Conifers , Elder , Beech
The location would also be in easy reach of  JW where there is predominant Oak and Beech

The predominant Moth was the Heart and Dart with upward of 12 released. Buff Ermine also had a good Innings

One to Look out for this month................

This is a Smoky Wave  I found on Marsden Moor yesterday there were about 30 + . Its rare in Calderdale with very few recent records. Its seen around heather and bilberry ,and looks white when its flushed , most other day flyers at the moment look brown.. It has been recorded all over Yorkshire in large numbers at the moment.............

Ogden Water

Quite a number of male nemophora deerella around the edge of the reservoir today. Also 2 large yellow underwing in the grass (they survived the cutting).
